In Loving Memory of Our Own "Master Mechanic"Elio Ghirelli1927-2007
George Wadsworth, Manager of the Federal Aviation Administration Flight Standards District Office (Allentown) presents the FAA Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award to Elio (Al) Ghirelli.
Elio (Al) Ghirelli, Olyphant, PA, has been awarded the prestigious Charles Taylor “Master Mechanic” Award by the Federal Aviation Administration. This award recognizes aviation maintenance personnel with at least 50 years of experience in the aviation maintenance industry. The award is named for Mr. Charles Taylor, the mechanic who built the engine and maintained the Wright Brothers airplane. Ghirelli, a World War II veteran, began working as an aircraft mechanic in the Alaskan “bush” in 1951. In 1955 he returned to his native Scranton area, where he was employed at the Scranton Municipal (Schultzville) airport until 1973, and later worked for Pocono Airlines, Air America Modifications, and Spring Hill Aviation. He has been employed as a mechanic and inspector by O&N Aircraft Modifications in Factoryville since 1994. He is certificated as an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Mechanic and Inspector. The award was presented by George Wadsworth, Manager of the FAA Flight Standards District Office in Allentown. He was accompanied by Allentown FAA Inspectors Bill Rush, Gene McCoy, and Rod Bourey. In his presentation Mr. Wadsworth stated that Ghirelli is only the second recipient of this honor in the Eastern Pennsylvania district. Ghirelli’s name will be recorded in a “Role of Honor” leather book in the Washington, DC Federal Aviation Administration Building. The presentation was attended by Ghirelli’s co-workers at O&N Aircraft, his wife Rose, and family, and several friends from the local aviation community.
